Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and UK Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch held a video conference on January 28, during which Wang expressed China's concerns over the British government's nationalization of British Steel, which is owned by Chinese company Jingye Group 1. Wang stated: "China attaches great importance to the British Steel nationalization issue and urges the UK to comply with relevant international rules and fulfill its obligations under the China-UK Investment Protection Agreement" 1.
Jingye Group acquired British Steel in 2020 with an investment of 1.2 billion pounds, equivalent to approximately 52.2 billion Taiwan dollars 1.
