Jordan Kenyon has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 12 years, for a catastrophic crash that claimed the life of a child in regional Victoria.1 The incident occurred on January 3, 2024, on Hamilton Highway at Stonehaven near Geelong, when Kenyon's vehicle collided with a family car, killing 12-year-old Mia Rossiter and injuring members of her family as well as Kenyon's own brother.1
Presiding Judge Michael Tinney described Kenyon as a "maniac" driver with a "deplorable" driving record.1 Kenyon was found to have been under the influence of the drug GHB at the time of the collision and had exceeded 150 km/h in the hour before the crash.1 Evidence presented to the court revealed that on December 14, 2023, Kenyon had filmed himself steering with his knee while holding a mobile phone and whisky bottle simultaneously.1 At the time of the fatal crash, Kenyon was on parole following a previous conviction for dangerous driving.1
Following the accident, Kenyon initially provided false information to police, claiming the vehicle was being driven by a person named "Brad" who did not exist.1 He subsequently pleaded guilty to charges including culpable driving causing death, negligent driving causing serious injury, and conduct endangering life.1 Under the sentencing terms, Kenyon will be eligible for release in 2038 at the earliest.1
