Jordan Kenyon has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 12 years, for a catastrophic crash that claimed the life of a child in regional Victoria.[1] The incident occurred on January 3, 2024, on Hamilton Highway at Stonehaven near Geelong, when Kenyon's vehicle collided with a family car, killing 12-year-old Mia Rossiter and injuring members of her family as well as Kenyon's own brother.[1]
Presiding Judge Michael Tinney described Kenyon as a "maniac" driver with a "deplorable" driving record.[1] Kenyon was found to have been under the influence of the drug GHB at the time of the collision and had exceeded 150 km/h in the hour before the crash.[1] Evidence presented to the court revealed that on December 14, 2023, Kenyon had filmed himself steering with his knee while holding a mobile phone and whisky bottle simultaneously.[1] At the time of the fatal crash, Kenyon was on parole following a previous conviction for dangerous driving.[1]
Following the accident, Kenyon initially provided false information to police, claiming the vehicle was being driven by a person named "Brad" who did not exist.[1] He subsequently pleaded guilty to charges including culpable driving causing death, negligent driving causing serious injury, and conduct endangering life.[1] Under the sentencing terms, Kenyon will be eligible for release in 2038 at the earliest.[1]
