The bell-making process remains labor-intensive, typically requiring three to four months per bell.[1] However, technological advances have significantly streamlined production: cleaning and polishing, which previously consumed 30 percent of total manufacturing time, now account for only one-tenth of the schedule.[1] During casting, molten bronze generates pressures exceeding 125 metric tons within the mold.[1] Premium bells require a precise bronze composition of 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin.[1]
The foundry confronts mounting economic pressures as demand from churches declines while material and labor costs surge. Bronze prices have skyrocketed from approximately eight euros per kilogram several years ago to 23 euros today,[1] and labor costs have risen 30 percent since the pandemic in 2020.[1] Despite these headwinds, Grassmayr continues to expand its reach: the foundry cast a bell standing 3.3 meters tall and weighing over 25 metric tons for Romania's national cathedral in 2016,[1] and its bells are now distributed across more than 100 countries worldwide.[1]
