A marginal Israeli settler organization has made multiple clandestine crossings into Syria in recent weeks with the aim of establishing a Jewish settlement in the country's southwestern region.[1] The group, known as Bashan Pioneers, claims historical rights to territory in southwestern Syria and asserts that its presence would help secure Israeli control over the Golan Heights.[1] Israeli military forces have intercepted these infiltrators on several occasions and handed them over to police, though no charges have been filed to date.[1]
The Bashan Pioneers organization comprises dozens of members who have attempted to cross the border every few days in recent weeks.[1] Amos Azaria, the group's leader and a computer science professor at Ariel University in the West Bank, has stated that "the entire Daraa region must be cleared of enemies seeking to destroy us and replaced with Jewish settlements."[1] Israeli military announced in December 2024 the establishment of a "buffer zone" in southern Syria encompassing the Quneitra, Daraa, and Suwayda provinces.[1] Government officials Amichai Eliyahu and Solomon Karhi have met with members of the organization.[1]
