A growing number of people under 30 are being treated for alcohol dependence in hospital wards, marking a significant shift in the demographic profile of patients seeking treatment. According to data from Beijing Hui Long Guan Hospital, patients aged 30 and below now account for approximately 30 percent of admissions, a stark change from previous patterns when alcohol dependence cases were concentrated among those aged 35 to 55.[1] Female patients have shown particularly notable increases in hospital admissions over the past two years.[1]
Alcohol dependence is classified as a mental disorder in medical terms, characterized by prolonged compulsive drinking behavior that patients struggle to control independently.[1] Beijing Hui Long Guan Hospital treats approximately 350 patients with alcohol dependence annually as inpatients, with outpatient numbers ranging from 5 to 6 times higher than hospital admissions.[1] Among hospitalized patients, those under 30 comprise roughly 30 percent, with male and female patients occurring in a ratio of approximately 6 to 1.[1]
Nationally, conservative estimates suggest there are more than 60 million people with alcohol use disorders, yet fewer than 10 percent receive formal treatment.[1] Hunan Province Brain Hospital has treated patients as young as 15 years old with alcohol dependence.[1] A revised version of the Diagnostic and Treatment Guidelines for Alcohol Use-Related Disorders is anticipated to be released within 2026.[1]
