Mexican drug trafficking organizations have begun outsourcing methamphetamine manufacturing to Nigeria and other West African countries.[1] In May 2024, Nigerian drug enforcement authorities discovered the country's largest clandestine drug laboratory in a forest setting, seizing over 2 tons of methamphetamine valued at approximately $360 million and arresting 10 suspects, including three Mexican nationals.[1]
U.S. African Command intelligence has documented 14 drug laboratories controlled by Mexican operators being dismantled since 2023, with the majority located in Nigeria and linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco New Generation Cartel.[1] According to James Griego, the U.S. African Command's director of counter-narcotics operations, four out of five of these facilities are situated in Nigeria.[1] The discovered labs represent a significant expansion of Mexican cartel operations: one facility was found in 2023, six in 2024, two in the first two months of 2025, and five more identified subsequently.[1] The drug trafficking activity occurs against the backdrop of Nigeria's substantial drug consumption problem—in 2018, the adult illicit drug use rate in Nigeria was 14.4 percent, more than double the global average.[1]
