Gabriel Perez, a White House teleprompter operator, is no longer employed by the federal government following allegations that he used insider knowledge to place bets on prediction market Kalshi regarding President Trump's speeches.[1][2] Perez reportedly won over $100,000 through these wagers, which exceeded half of his annual salary of $175,000.[2] White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt characterized the insider trading allegations as "deeply regrettable" and "frankly disgusting."[1][2]
Perez had been operating teleprompters for Trump since 2016 and was placed on unpaid leave after the betting activity came to light.[2] The platform Kalshi reported the trades to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and has since implemented new policies requiring users to disclose their workplace, with rules prohibiting bets based on information obtained through one's position.[1][2] In May, federal prosecutors charged soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke with fraudulently earning $400,000 by betting on the removal of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.[2]
