Former members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have filed a lawsuit against Penske Media, its owner Jay Penske, Eldridge Industries, and CEO Todd Boehly, accusing them of orchestrating a fraudulent scheme to acquire the Golden Globes in 2023.[1] The plaintiffs allege that the defendants deliberately orchestrated a boycott campaign targeting the Golden Globes to devalue the awards show, concealed Penske's involvement in the transaction, and violated antitrust laws.[1] The HFPA is seeking at least $150 million in damages and asking the court to void the HFPA dissolution agreement that facilitated the acquisition.[1]
The Golden Globes, an 80-year-old awards institution, faced significant reputational challenges following a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation that revealed the HFPA had only one Black member among its ranks.[1] In response to these diversity concerns, NBC refused to broadcast the Golden Globes ceremony in 2022.[1] Following Penske Media's acquisition, the awards show transitioned to CBS for its broadcast.[1] Penske Media owns several prominent entertainment publications, including Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter.[1] Boehly is also a partial owner of Chelsea Football Club and the Los Angeles Dodgers.[1]
