A woman who accused street artist Anthony Lister of rape has come forward publicly to highlight serious deficiencies in how courts treat sexual assault complainants.[1] Violet, 30, testified in court in September 2024 after initially reporting the alleged assault to authorities in December 2016.[1] Lister was charged in March 2020 and ultimately acquitted of all charges related to Violet's allegations in December 2024, with a second trial resulting in his acquittal on all counts in 2025.[1]
Violet decided to reveal her identity to expose the systemic problems she encountered throughout the legal process, including lack of adequate psychological support, difficulty communicating with prosecutors, and unfair treatment in the courtroom.[1] She described feeling instrumentalized by the system, stating: "I often felt like I was a pawn in their game."[1] Among the disturbing details, a jury viewed a recording of sexual activity between Violet and Lister that she did not know was being filmed.[1]
Drawing on her experience, Violet hopes to educate other witnesses about legal procedures and drive meaningful reform.[1] Karen Bevan, chief executive of Full Stop Australia, has called for the expansion of a pilot program that deploys community justice system navigators to support sexual violence survivors.[1]
