Guyana authorities have filed murder charges against three crew members in connection with the capsizing of the state-owned ferry MV Barima on July 18.[1][2] The vessel, which was 87 years old, sank during a voyage between Georgetown and Ketuma with 179 people aboard.[1] The disaster resulted in over 70 deaths, with 30 people still missing and 77 rescued, marking the country's deadliest maritime disaster.[1][2]
The three charged individuals are Captain Kevin Price, aged 40; First Mate Randel Dwaine Roberts, aged 42; and Cargo Supervisor Deron Granderson, aged 33.[1] According to Prime Minister Mark Phillips, all three tested positive for cannabis use.[2] The accused were formally charged and detained on July 28, with their next court hearing scheduled for August 3.[1][2]
The sunken ferry remains at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of approximately 50 feet, or 15 meters.[1] Prime Minister Phillips indicated the vessel is unlikely to be salvaged.[1] The government has established an international investigative committee composed of legal and maritime experts to examine the circumstances of the accident.[1]
