Kentucky's Democratic Governor Andy Beshear has called on Republican Senator Mitch McConnell to demonstrate his ability to continue serving in office or step down following an extended hospitalization and recovery period.[1] The 84-year-old senator was admitted to a medical facility on June 14 after a fall and remains in a rehabilitation center undergoing physical therapy without having received medical clearance to resume duties.[1]
In his letter to McConnell, Beshear stated: "I call on you to speak directly to the people of Kentucky and provide proof that you are fit to continue serving, or resign."[1] The governor simultaneously wrote to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urging an investigation into McConnell's health status.[1] McConnell has led Senate Republicans for nearly two decades.[1] His most recent official updates were released on July 12 and July 27, each accompanied by a single photograph.[1]
