Pengwan Community in Yantian District, Shenzhen, has established an innovative mediation mechanism by drawing inspiration from the historical "Six-Foot Lane" story to resolve neighborhood conflicts.[1] The community party committee created the "Take a Step Back" studio, located on the third floor of the party and community service center, staffed by a mediation team composed of retired party members including Tu Yuping.[1] The initiative employs a six-character working method encompassing "listen, understand, advise, borrow, step back, and harmonize."[1]
Since December 2024, the community has processed a total of 491 disputes through a rapid-response mechanism coordinating grid workers, property management, and mediators, achieving a 95% resolution rate.[1] The mediation efforts have addressed over 80 public livelihood concerns, including noise disturbances and parking difficulties.[1] Tu Yuping, a lead mediator, has individually resolved nearly one hundred conflicts and disputes over the past two years.[1] The community's work has been recognized with two thank-you letters and six commendation banners from residents.[1]
