A personal diary belonging to Anthony Fauci, a scientist at the National Institutes of Health, has been made public by Republican Senator Rand Paul, offering an intimate glimpse into Fauci's perspective on his interactions with former President Trump during the pandemic response.[1] The leaked diary, containing over 1,000 pages of entries from the most severe months of the COVID-19 crisis, documents Fauci's frustration with what he characterized as Trump's rambling statements during pandemic briefings, alongside his acknowledgment of the celebrity status he gained as a central figure in the government's coronavirus response.[1]
The diary entries span the early stages of the pandemic through late 2020, revealing candid observations about presidential meetings. During a Situation Room meeting on January 29, 2020, Trump told Fauci: "Anthony, you're really a celebrity. My good friend Lou Dobbs told me you're one of the smartest, most knowledgeable and outstanding people he knows."[1] However, Fauci's tone grew critical in subsequent months. Following a March 27, 2020 press briefing, he recorded: "Very laborious press conference, POTUS rambling on endlessly," and described a March 28 interaction as "a disturbing rambling discussion" in which Trump discussed television ratings, hydroxychloroquine, influenza, and various other topics.[1] By November 1, 2020, Trump called Fauci aboard Air Force One, saying, "Tony, I really like you... but what are you doing? You keep bombing me," while Fauci noted on November 10 that Trump remained convinced Republicans had won the election, describing it as a "complete parallel universe."[1]
Fauci's diary also documents his awareness of his rising prominence, writing on March 10, 2020: "Anyway, I'm becoming an international celebrity."[1] He recorded receiving interaction requests from celebrities including Trevor Noah and Steph Curry.[1] Alongside this recognition came threats; an entry from March 27, 2020 noted "security issues—threats on the dark web" targeting himself, Chris, and his daughters, with Fauci writing in June 2021 that "vicious attacks" against him continued.[1] Fauci stepped down from his role in late 2022 and is scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, where Paul has long maintained that Fauci helped conceal the possibility of a laboratory leak of coronavirus—allegations Fauci has denied.[1]
