Ryan Murphy, infrastructure chair of Brisbane City Council, has credited his cancer diagnosis with reshaping his approach to his political role.[1] Murphy, who has served as a councillor for approximately 14 years after winning his first election by just 2000 votes against a 30-year incumbent, stated: "It's really, I suppose, hastened my timeline to make a real impact in the time that I've got in the role that I have."[1] The diagnosis has motivated him to accelerate infrastructure projects ahead of Brisbane's 2032 Olympic Games.[1]
Beyond his council work, Murphy is now advocating for increased awareness of prostate cancer screening.[1] He notes that the disease kills 11 men daily in Australia and represents "the single greatest cause of death of men," with one in five men affected by the condition.[1] However, survival rates have improved significantly, reaching 95 per cent or higher in Australia, up from 70 per cent two to three decades ago.[1] Murphy himself was not scheduled for a cancer test for 14 years before his diagnosis, despite the PSA test being available at a cost of $30 or free for those with a family history.[1]
