Bosnian authorities are investigating an incident of desecration and fire damage at a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the southern town of Medjugorje.[1] The statue's face and hands were painted black, with the English phrase "Devil in a skirt" inscribed on its base.[1] Additionally, a fence near the site bore Polish-language graffiti stating "They are fraudsters, I have proof," apparently directed at pilgrims visiting the location.[1]
The Medjugorje shrine has been a focal point of Catholic devotion since 1981, when six children and teenagers reported witnessing an apparition of the Virgin Mary.[1] The site gained renewed significance following a Vatican decision in 2024 that permits believers to organize pilgrimages to the location, even though the Church has not formally authenticated the reported apparition.[1]
