The rapid advancement and cost reduction of generative AI models have triggered a widespread trust crisis in China's online novel industry. The expense of producing AI-generated content spanning one million characters has plummeted from five thousand to ten thousand yuan to approximately one thousand yuan, enabling mass production of unmarked AI works that compete directly with human-authored stories on major platforms.[1]
Numerous titles have been exposed for containing partially or entirely AI-generated content without proper disclosure. Works such as "The Illusionist in the Lunar World" exemplify this growing problem, where readers discover they have been consuming machine-generated narratives under false pretenses.[1] The situation has become severe enough that leading platforms have taken action: Qidian has implemented a comprehensive ban on AI-generated fiction, while Tomato Novel processed approximately one hundred fifty thousand AI-generated and low-quality works in June alone.[1]
The core tension stems from AI's operational advantage over traditional authors. By publishing several tens of thousands of words daily, AI-generated novels dominate ranking lists and occupy the same content pool and traffic allocation as manually written works, fundamentally altering competitive dynamics.[1] Industry insiders have voiced strong resistance to this trend. A writer identified as "Xiao A" stated that "virtually all legitimate authors overwhelmingly oppose AI writing, with only a tiny minority of AI tool developers, course sellers, and software vendors voicing strong support."[1]
Calls for systemic reform have emerged across the industry, with stakeholders advocating for dedicated AI content sections on platforms, clear labeling of content origins, and stronger disclosure requirements to protect reader rights and preserve industry credibility.[1]
