Shenzhen and Hong Kong have formally initiated a collaborative effort to establish a shared botanical garden serving the Greater Bay Area.[1] On July 27, the Shenzhen Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the Shenzhen City Management and Law Enforcement Bureau, Hong Kong's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department jointly signed the Framework Arrangement for the Joint Construction of a Botanical Garden by Shenzhen and Hong Kong.[1] The project leverages existing ecological and research resources from both regions to advance conservation and scientific collaboration.[1]
The initiative will focus on five key areas of cooperation: the collection and protection of plant diversity, ecological protection and corridor construction, research collaboration and capacity building, science education and horticultural exhibition, and sustainable utilization of plant resources.[1] Shenzhen's Fairylake Botanical Garden houses over 13,000 plant taxa and operates specialized facilities including the National Cycad Germplasm Resource Protection Center and the Fern Germplasm Resource Bank.[1] This partnership builds on established ecological ties between the two territories, including the 2023 designation of the Futian Mangrove Reserve in Shenzhen and Hong Kong's Mai Po reserve as sister protection areas.[1]
