India's youth-led Cockroach movement has accused the government of breaking its commitments following the forced resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, with organizers threatening to resume demonstrations if detained demonstrators are not released.[1] The movement, which successfully pressured the minister to step down, now faces allegations of state retaliation against student activists who participated in the uprising.[1]
According to movement representatives, at least 100 people have been arrested, with many facing non-bailable charges in cases filed across Delhi, Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar.[1] The protests, which drew hundreds of thousands of students to major Indian cities including New Delhi in July, were originally mounted to demand reforms to the examination system.[1] On July 20, demonstrations in New Delhi turned violent when police deployed tear gas and batons to disperse crowds.[1] CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka declared: "If the government does not fulfill the agreement and release all those detained or arrested, we will be forced to resume our protests."[1]
The movement was initiated in May by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old public relations graduate who has become its leading figure.[1] Meanwhile, India's Chief Justice has called for an independent investigation into allegations of police violence during the crackdown.[1]
