China's Commerce Ministry Policy Research Office Director Lin Weilong stated on July 28 that the European Union has been implementing a series of protectionist measures against China, which have severely undermined Chinese enterprises' confidence in cooperating with Europe.[1] Lin emphasized that differences should not serve as a pretext for fabricating false accusations and imposing restrictions, and that China is willing to resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation with the EU.[1]
Addressing European concerns about currency valuation, Lin clarified that China will not pursue competitive advantages through exchange rate depreciation and has no need to artificially undervalue the yuan to boost exports.[2] He stressed that EU claims of yuan undervaluation lack factual basis, noting that China-EU cargo trade reached $447.88 billion in the first half of the year, representing a year-on-year growth of 14.2 percent.[2] Lin reaffirmed China's commitment to allowing market forces to play a decisive role in exchange rate formation, maintaining the yuan at a reasonably balanced level.[2] He concluded that China is not the source of the EU's trade difficulties, but rather a partner in solving them.[2]
