Jewish patients in Australia have requested that their religious identity be removed from medical documents due to concerns about discrimination at hospitals, according to testimony heard by the country's Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.[1] The matter came to light as the commission examines cases of alleged antisemitic conduct and discriminatory practices affecting the Jewish community.
Two nurses from Bankstown Hospital were dismissed following a February 2025 video in which they were alleged to have threatened an Israeli patient, with the case currently before the courts.[1] Rabbi Kastiel told the commission that the Jewish community experiences "genuine insecurity" amid these incidents and concerns.[1]
The commission has also investigated several high-profile cases involving the cancellation of visas held by individuals with antisemitic views. In November 2024, a neo-Nazi named Matthew Grote had his visa cancelled and was deported to South Africa following antisemitic protests.[1] More recently in 2025, rapper Kanye West's visa was cancelled due to antisemitic statements he made.[1]
The hearing also addressed consequences faced by public servants for political conduct. Over 2,000 civil servants were sanctioned after signing an open letter regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, raising questions about the application of political neutrality rules in the civil service.[1]
