Chinese automaker BYD has entered Japan's competitive kei car segment with its new Racco model, positioning an entry-level variant at 1.95 million yen (approximately 386,000 Taiwan dollars) before taxes.[1] This pre-tax pricing undercuts the popular Nissan Sakura in the same category, though actual purchase prices remain higher once government subsidies are factored in due to BYD's access to fewer incentive programs.[1]
BYD established its presence in the Japanese market in 2023 and has accumulated over 7,400 vehicle sales through the end of 2025.[1] The company aims to secure 10,000 Racco orders by year-end, with analyst Hiroki Ihara from Tachibana Securities noting that the primary objective is to boost brand recognition rather than pursue immediate profitability.[1] The K-car segment, defined by specifications including maximum dimensions of 3.4 meters in length, 1.48 meters in width, and 2 meters in height, as well as engine displacement not exceeding 660cc and horsepower capped at 64, accounts for approximately one-third of Japan's total automobile sales.[1]
