British textile artist Kirstie Macleod has completed a monumental red dress that has shattered multiple Guinness World Records, marking the largest collaborative embroidery project undertaken globally.[1] The silk gown, which weighs 6.8 kilograms, was crafted over 14 years from 2009 to 2023, incorporating approximately one billion stitches contributed by 380 makers from 51 countries.[1] The participants spanned diverse demographics, ranging from 6 to over 80 years old, and included 367 women, 11 men, and 2 non-binary individuals.[1]
The dress is currently on display at the Brisbane Museum through September 13, with free admission available to the public.[1] Following its Australian exhibition, the artwork will travel to Rwanda and the United Kingdom for further showings.[1] Remarkably, only 28 people have ever worn the garment.[1] Macleod described the creation as a powerful symbol, stating that "this dress is a powerful symbol of femininity—it depicts a life, a form."[1]
