Johnson & Johnson has proposed a settlement of up to $5.5 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits in the United States alleging that its talcum powder products caused ovarian cancer.[1][2] The agreement would cover approximately 69,000 to 76,000 cases, representing the majority of remaining talc-related claims against the company.[1][2] Under the terms, J&J plans to pay up to $3 billion in 2027, with additional payments to follow after 2028.[1][2]
The settlement requires approval from attorneys representing at least 95 percent of ovarian cancer claimants to become final.[1][2] J&J has consistently denied that its talcum powder contains asbestos or causes cancer.[1] The company discontinued the production and sale of talc-based baby powder globally in 2022, having already ceased U.S. sales of the product in 2020, transitioning to cornstarch-based alternatives.[2] Litigation over the product has been ongoing since 2009, and legal proceedings resumed in March 2025 after being suspended for more than three years.[2]
