A three-year noise conflict between Diamond Bay Bowling Club in Sydney's eastern suburbs and neighboring residents has concluded without enforcement action from regulators.[1] Following an 18-month investigation, Liquor & Gaming NSW determined that noise from the club's live entertainment and patron activities did not meet the legal threshold of "unreasonable and serious interference," and therefore issued no penalties.[1]
The dispute has generated 57 formal complaints since 2023, filed by one primary complainant and eight neighboring residents.[1] The club has invested more than $200,000 in noise mitigation measures, including installation of double-glazed windows, acoustic treatments, and sound barriers.[1] Operating in the area since 1963, the venue typically closes at 10 p.m. on weekends.[1] The principal complainant moved to the neighboring area approximately five years ago.[1]
Darren Duke, director of Liquor & Gaming NSW, ruled that the complaint could not be sustained under the state government's recent regulatory reform framework.[1] NSW Late-Night Economy Minister John Graham stated: "The days of moving next to an established venue and complaining until it closes are over."[1]
