Chinese smartphone makers are stepping into the handheld gimbal camera space, challenging the dominance of DJI Pocket and Insta360 in a market experiencing explosive growth.[1] Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi, Honor, and Huawei have all initiated development projects in this category, drawn by market dynamics that have made smartphone manufacturing increasingly unprofitable.[1]
The handheld smart camera market has become far more attractive than smartphones for these manufacturers. Global shipments of handheld smart cameras are projected to reach 16.65 million units in 2025, representing an 83% year-over-year surge, with sales revenue exceeding 46.1 billion yuan.[1] One-gimbal integrated camera products have shown annual growth exceeding 100%, and the market is expected to sustain strong momentum, with a five-year compound annual growth rate of approximately 18% to 20% through 2030, eventually surpassing 40 million units.[1] By contrast, global smartphone shipments are forecast to decline 13.9% year-over-year in 2026, marking the lowest level since 2013.[1]
Established smartphone manufacturers possess significant competitive advantages in this transition, including mature hardware supply chains, accumulated imaging algorithms, and expansive distribution networks.[1] DJI Pocket 3 has already sold over 10 million units cumulatively with revenues exceeding 30 billion yuan and a composite gross margin above 40%, demonstrating the market's profitability.[1] Vivo's engineering prototypes have largely completed testing phases, with stockpiling expected at the million-unit scale.[1] OPPO's project, internally codenamed "Fuyao," is led personally by Chief Product Officer Liu Zuohu with a research team of at least 200 people, and is expected to launch formally in the fourth quarter of this year.[1] Honor has taken a distinct approach by integrating gimbal functionality directly into smartphone bodies.[1]
