A Beijing-based art educator has dedicated two decades to nurturing a former student's artistic career despite the student's struggle with mental illness. Lai Shengyu, a painting instructor at Beihang University, has sustained continuous support for Jiang Wei, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2006 and requires lifelong medication.[1]
Jiang Wei's journey has been marked by profound hardship. In 2020, he faced a cascade of crises: job loss, his father's death, and his mother's fractured bones from a car accident.[1] During this darkest period, Jiang Wei expressed suicidal thoughts to his mentor.[1] Rather than abandon his student, Lai Shengyu intensified his commitment, purchasing Jiang Wei's paintings each month as soon as his salary arrived and promising to help care for Jiang Wei's mother.[1] This practice began in 2009, when Lai spent 8,000 yuan out of his own pocket to buy one of Jiang Wei's works.[1]
The investment has yielded meaningful results. Jiang Wei now takes 27 pills daily to manage his condition while dedicating himself to artistic creation.[1] His work has gained recognition through multiple exhibitions: a solo show titled "The Energy of Life" at the 798 Art District in Beijing in December 2024, which extended beyond its original run to more than twenty days;[1] and an upcoming solo exhibition called "Being Myself" scheduled for autumn 2025 at Shenzhen Bay One Art Center.[1] Some of his paintings have sold for prices reaching hundreds of thousands of yuan.[1] The story of his artistic journey has also been shared through video media, further amplifying his reach and impact.[1]
