A reporter at the Qianjiang Evening News became an unlikely protagonist in solving a major criminal case that spanned more than two decades. Bai Jianbin, who spent 32 years as a journalist, played a pivotal role in investigating a series of jewelry store robberies across Zhejiang Province, ultimately leading to the capture of the suspect in 2017.[1]
The case began in 1995 when an armed robbery occurred at the Oasis Jewelry Store in Ningbo, resulting in the deaths of two security guards and the theft of over 1.6 million yuan in gold and silver jewelry.[1] Four separate robberies with identical methods followed in 1995, 1998, 2004, and 2007.[1] Through meticulous reporting and investigation, Bai discovered that a suspect named Xu had connections to a 1994 jewelry store heist in Chanxing.[1] On the day after Bai's report was published, Xu confessed to the Chanxing case.[1] These efforts culminated in Xu's capture on March 29, 2017.[1]
Bai's contributions to the investigation earned him commendations from both the Zhejiang Provincial Public Security Bureau and the Hangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau.[1] His work has gained wider recognition through popular culture; the television series "Unsolved Cases" features a character named Bai Lang, portrayed by actor Yue Yunpeng, who is based on Bai Jianbin's real-life role as an investigative journalist.[1] Bai formally retired in 2023 after his decades of dedicated reporting.[1]
