A restaurant owner in Beijing's Mentougou district has enforced an unwavering no-smoking ban since April 2020, refusing to allow customers to smoke anywhere within the establishment, whether in private dining rooms or after consuming alcohol.[1] The policy was initiated after the owner's wife suffered prolonged respiratory irritation and was found to have small nodules in her lungs from years of secondhand smoke exposure.[1]
The decision initially proved costly, with the restaurant losing approximately half its regular customers, particularly long-time smoking patrons.[1] However, the sustained commitment to maintaining a smoke-free environment gradually attracted a new clientele, drawing younger diners, families, and female customers seeking such a venue.[1] After six years of consistent implementation, the business has flourished; the restaurant now operates with a team of fourteen to fifteen people working daily and has become a notable establishment in the Mentougou area.[1]
The restaurant's no-smoking stance aligns with Beijing's regulatory framework, as the city's smoking control ordinance has prohibited smoking indoors in public and workplace settings since June 1, 2015, with violators subject to fines up to 200 yuan.[1] The restaurant's principled approach gained public recognition when television host Bai Yansong publicly endorsed the establishment's anti-smoking efforts on July 4.[1]
