Kunlun Energy's Hainan LNG receiving station has undergone a comprehensive transformation into a zero-carbon facility by integrating distributed photovoltaic technology, boil-off gas cold energy recovery, and combined cooling, heating, and power systems [1]. The station became Kunlun Energy's first carbon-neutral LNG receiving facility by the end of 2024 and was awarded a four-star "Zero-Carbon Factory (Type I)" certification by the end of 2025 [1].
The facility's photovoltaic system began full operation in May 2024, with a capacity of 3.33 megawatts-peak, generating approximately 4.05 million kilowatt-hours annually [1]. Of this total, 1.45 million kilowatt-hours are consumed on-site, resulting in annual electricity cost savings of 1.125 million yuan [1]. In 2025, the station's total carbon emissions reached 2,302.598 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, with indirect emissions from purchased electricity accounting for 990.546 tonnes, or approximately 43 percent of the total [1]. To further enhance sustainability, the station plans to deploy a 2-megawatt-hour electrochemical energy storage system beginning in 2026, targeting an increase in photovoltaic self-consumption rates from 35 percent to over 90 percent and enabling an additional annual emissions reduction of 2,160 tonnes of carbon dioxide [1].
Complementing its decarbonization efforts, Kunlun Energy established "Wenfeng Deer Heritage," an autonomous biodiversity conservation area spanning 12.5 hectares, which was formally unveiled on August 15, 2024 [1]. The protected area has documented a total of 230 species, including 165 vascular plant species, 48 bird species, and 18 amphibian, reptile, and mammal species [1]. This integrated approach reflects Kunlun Energy's broader commitment outlined in its Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Action Plan 1.0, released in 2022, which pledges to achieve carbon peak status by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050 [1].
