The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age's Good Food Guide have announced the opening of applications for the Young Chef of the Year award, inviting aspiring culinary professionals to showcase their talents.[1] The prize is open to professional chefs aged 30 and under who are Australian permanent residents and based in Victoria, New South Wales, or the Australian Capital Territory.[1] Applications close on August 23, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.[1]
Finalists will be invited to participate in interviews with the judging panel and subsequently compete in showcase dinners held in Melbourne and Sydney.[1] Winners will be announced at the Good Food Guide Awards ceremony taking place in October across both cities.[1] The award recognizes outstanding culinary skill, social responsibility, community contribution, mentorship of fellow chefs, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.[1] The 2025 recipients are Jen Kwok Lee, representing the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide, and Viveik Vinoharan, representing The Age.[1]
