The iQiyi drama series "Old Stories of Yuhong," which premiered on September 29, 2026, as part of the platform's "Mist Theater" brand, has drawn significant attention for its unique approach to the suspense genre 1. Southern Weekly News reviewed the show, noting that it employs a social realist mystery style characterized by an omniscient narrative perspective, meaning viewers are aware of the killer's identity from the outset 1. This structural choice shifts the dramatic tension away from traditional whodunit elements and focuses instead on guessing character motivations 1.
The plot centers on Liu Yang, a railway worker who discovers his colleagues engaging in poaching and smuggling operations 1. After killing a coworker, he returns to his hometown, Tiecheng, where he subsequently commits murder to protect his first love 1. Critics observed that the series uses comedic elements to handle folk subplots, such as portraying prophecies of three deaths as the antics of a charlatan spiritual medium, thereby creating a distinct atmospheric blend 1. A key detail in the finale involves Liu Yang’s sister, Liu Juan, who works as a community police officer; she uncovers a button from her brother’s coat at the crime scene, linking him to the events 1.
