The Ministry of Ecology and Environment reported at its July press briefing that the nation's ecological environment demonstrated overall improvement during the first half of 2026. [1]
Air quality metrics reflected significant progress across major indicators. The average concentration of PM2.5 in 339 prefecture-level and above cities declined 6.6 percent year-on-year to 29.9 micrograms per cubic meter, while PM10 levels fell 7.4 percent to 50 micrograms per cubic meter. [1] The proportion of days with air quality rated as good or excellent reached 82.8 percent, up 4.5 percentage points compared to the same period last year, and the share of days with severe or worse pollution decreased to 1 percent, improving by 0.5 percentage points. [1]
Water quality outcomes similarly showed marked improvement. Nationally, water bodies meeting Class I-III standards accounted for 87.4 percent of surface water, an increase of 3 percentage points year-on-year, while the proportion of inferior Class V water sections fell to 0.9 percent, down 1.2 percentage points. [1] Among 145 monitored key lakes and reservoirs, 75.9 percent achieved Class I-III water quality standards, representing a 3.5 percentage point rise from the previous year. [1]
