Norway has become the world's dominant farmed salmon producer through aggressive marketing of salmon sushi globally, now supplying more than half of all Atlantic salmon consumed worldwide.[1] The industry represents the country's second-largest export sector, valued at $18 billion annually and surpassed only by oil revenues.[1] However, this expansion has come at a significant environmental cost to Norway's fjord ecosystems.
The rapid growth of open-net salmon farming has created severe ecological damage in Norwegian waterways.[1] Most farms lack closed bottoms, allowing fish waste and feed to flow directly into fjords, triggering nutrient pollution, harmful algal blooms, and oxygen depletion that have degraded local marine habitats.[1] In Hardanger Fjord, deep-water oxygen levels have declined by one-third since the 1950s.[1] The health of farmed salmon stocks has also deteriorated noticeably: the population of low-grade "production fish" has more than doubled in less than a decade.[1] Researchers have detected pesticide residues even at sites that have remained inactive for two decades.[1]
Addressing these environmental consequences presents significant technical and financial obstacles. Hofseth, a company developing closed-containment farming systems known as "eggs," has created an alternative to standard open-net cages, but the cost of such systems is at least ten times higher than conventional operations.[1]
