Hobart City Council has voted to support a proposal to return approximately 4.9 hectares of land near Queens Domain to Tasmania's Indigenous community.[1] The council approved the measure by a margin of 9 votes to 3.[1]
The returned land would be developed into an Indigenous cultural centre operated by the Tasmania Aboriginal Centre.[1] If ultimately approved, this would mark Tasmania's first significant land handback to an Indigenous community since 2005.[1] The proposal still requires further development applications and public consultation processes before final approval.[1]
Mayor Anna Reynolds emphasized the importance of state government support for the initiative, noting that "if we had a state government who did not want this to happen, roadblocks could be put in place."[1] Sarah Wilcox, general manager of the Aboriginal Land Council, described the opportunity as significant, stating that "this is a really unique opportunity to think about establishing a cultural centre which can serve as a keeping place."[1]
