Voice AI infrastructure company Deepgram announced on Thursday its acquisition of Daily, the startup behind the open-source framework Pipecat. The deal aims to strengthen Deepgram’s capabilities in real-time voice and video infrastructure. Pipecat serves as a framework for managing voice and video streams along with speech-to-text, large language model, and text-to-speech integrations, specifically designed to reduce latency. Daily had previously raised more than $62 million from investors including Tiger Global before this acquisition. Deepgram achieved unicorn status earlier this year following a $130 million Series C funding round. Notably, both companies originated from the 2016 batch of Y Combinator accelerators 1.
As part of the merger, Deepgram and the Pipecat team have jointly developed the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS), intended to improve the development experience for voice agents. Kwindla Kramer, co-founder of Daily, stated that the decision to join forces with Deepgram was driven by CEO Scott Stephenson’s commitment to keeping Pipecat open source 1.
