The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality announced that two farms reported avian influenza outbreaks as the country entered the autumn-winter season 1. To contain the spread of the virus, authorities culled approximately 45,000 poultry at a farm in Westerkwartier, Groningen province, and about 150 poultry at another farm in Edam-Volendam, North Holland province 1. This marks the first such outbreak reported in the Netherlands since July of this year 1.
In response to the affected areas, officials have implemented strict transport bans on 21 farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the infected sites, prohibiting the external shipment of poultry, eggs, and feed 1. Relevant departments are currently conducting risk assessments and considering the reinstatement of indoor confinement measures to strengthen disease control 1. Notably, since 2024, Dutch authorities have cumulatively culled more than 2.4 million poultry 1.
