Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index declined 22.8 points, or 0.3%, to 8,871.2 in early trading.[1] The drop was driven partly by mixed performance on Wall Street and a sharp fall in oil prices.[1] West Texas crude plummeted below $82 per barrel following President Trump's announcement of a suspension in military operations between the United States and Iran to allow for negotiations, while Brent crude fell by its largest margin in over three months, approaching $88.[1]
Energy company Viva Energy surged more than 3% as Middle East tensions boosted its earnings outlook.[1] The company raised its first-half EBITDA guidance to between A$770 million and A$780 million, a significant increase from A$305 million in the prior-year period.[1] Meanwhile, the Australian dollar weakened 0.1% to $0.6986 against the US dollar.[1]
Separately, Trump renewed calls for the US Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, stating: "Rates should be lowered... We have other countries that are paying less interest rates."[1] The Fed is scheduled to announce its policy decision on Wednesday (US time), with market expectations pointing to rates remaining unchanged, though there is a 36% probability of a rate increase priced in.[1]
