The Monday shooting at the American consulate was the second such attack on the facility in 2024, following a previous incident in March.1 Canadian authorities suspect the violence is connected to a hired mercenary operation allegedly backed by Iran, stemming from an investigation that previously resulted in multiple arrests of individuals suspected of involvement in paid shootings targeting Jewish schools and synagogues.1 According to Canadian MP Ruby Sahota, the March synagogue shooting in Toronto was funded and commissioned by a "foreign entity."1
A June operational intervention seized two firearms linked to the attacks: a 9-millimeter handgun connected to at least six shootings and a .45-caliber weapon associated with at least 21 incidents.1 Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw explained the operational pattern behind the violence, stating that "to get paid, they need to film their attacks."1 A Canadian integrated threat assessment report from June had previously flagged networks linked to Iran and the Islamic movement as a concern.1
