Researchers from the Germplasm Bank of Wild Species at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have identified a massive new fungal species named Dianjunus rex, colloquially dubbed "D-rex," found in forests in Yunnan Province 1. This discovery represents the largest known fungus within the phylum Ascomycota, featuring upright reproductive structures that can reach heights of 50 centimeters (20 inches) and weigh up to 2.2 kilograms (4.9 pounds) 1. The study was led by corresponding author Dr. Indunil C Senanayake and has been published in the journal Frontiers in Fungal Biology 1.
The taxonomic analysis places this new species into a distinct newly established family, Dianjunaceae, with its closest relative being Graphostroma platystoma 1. Molecular clock dating indicates that the lineage of Dianjunus rex originated approximately 65 million years ago, roughly one million years after the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction event 1.
