This measure follows confirmation that two passengers who transited through Entebbe International Airport in Uganda were subsequently diagnosed with Ebola in Kenya and Nigeria, prompting authorities to strengthen border and airport controls 1. Consequently, transit through Uganda by those traveling from the DRC is now prohibited, and only essential travelers are permitted entry under "intensive public health measures" 1.
The decision comes in response to what is described as the most deadly Ebola outbreak in DRC history, with more than 4,800 deaths recorded since May 1. The current strain is the rare Bundibugyo variant, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment 1. In neighboring Kenya, eight additional cases have been linked to the patient who transited through Uganda, including a female relative who died over the weekend 1.
