China and North Korea jointly held a ceremony on October 24 in Sinpyong County, Hwanghaebuk-do Province, North Korea, to mark the completion of renovation work at the cemetery dedicated to martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers 1. The project was carried out between April and October 2026 1.
The restoration effort encompassed five regions across North Korea: Sinpyong County, Wonsan City, Muncheon City, Chonnae County, and Sepo County 1. In Sinpyong County specifically, the renovated cemetery covers an area of approximately 600 square meters and contains the remains of 343 martyrs 1. Improvements included the addition of new facilities such as a memorial archway, a memorial plaza, and a wall inscribed with the names of the fallen heroes 1.
Key attendees at the ceremony included Qi Han, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in North Korea; Hong Zongming, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Veterans Affairs; and Kang Chol Ho, Vice Director of North Korea’s Ministry of Urban Management 1.
