An Australian prisoner's legal challenge against a ban on Vegemite in custody has been dismissed by Victoria's Supreme Court.1 Andre McKenzie, serving a life sentence for the fatal stabbing of property developer Otto Kuhn more than three decades ago, had argued that the prohibition violated his cultural rights as an Australian.1 Judge Claire Harris rejected the claim, determining that the restriction on Vegemite was "reasonable and capable of being justified" as a legitimate security measure and did not constitute a breach of human rights.1
The ban on Vegemite in Victorian prisons has been in place since 2006, implemented due to concerns that the yeast-based product's properties could interfere with drug detection dogs and potentially be used to manufacture alcohol.1 While Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania also prohibit Vegemite in correctional facilities, New South Wales permits its consumption.1 Vegemite itself was first developed in Melbourne in 1923.1
