Researchers at Sheffield University have successfully replicated the optical properties of the Lycurgus Cup, a Roman glass vessel now housed in the British Museum and dating back approximately 1,600 years.1 The cup displays a striking colour-shifting effect: it appears jade green under normal lighting but transforms to ruby red when backlit.1 This remarkable phenomenon is achieved through the embedding of gold and silver nanoparticles within the molten glass,1 with each nanoparticle being roughly 1,000 times smaller than a grain of sand.1
The recreation marks a significant achievement in understanding ancient Roman glassmaking techniques. The original cup was recognized in 2022 as one of the world's seven glass wonders by an international panel of experts.1 While similar coloured glass was replicated in the 1960s, the current research produces results that more closely match the authentic hues of the original piece.1 The cup's creation required heating the molten glass to temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius.1
The reproduction will be displayed at Sheffield University's Mind Festival from November 6-15 at the Millennium Gallery,1 with plans for the replica to enter the permanent collection of the Glass Art Museum thereafter.1
