Rise Reforming, a Y Combinator S26 startup founded by three University of Chicago molecular engineering graduates, has developed modular technology to convert biogas—a waste byproduct from landfills, farms, and wastewater treatment facilities—into valuable chemical products.[1] The company has completed proof-of-concept work and is now constructing a pilot facility at a wastewater treatment plant in the Chicago area, with operations expected to commence in the first quarter of 2027.[1]
The United States generates approximately 78 billion cubic feet of biogas annually, which if fully converted to methanol could represent roughly $20 billion in annual value.[1] Currently, about 60 percent of biogas is used for low-margin electricity and heat generation or is simply burned off as waste.[1] Rise Reforming's three-stage process purifies the biogas, converts it to syngas through a dual reforming procedure, and then upgrades the resulting material into final chemical products.[1]
The founding team brings diverse industry experience to the venture. George previously worked at companies including Highland Electric Fleets, Lucas held positions on offshore wind teams at Avangrid and worked at Argonne National Laboratory, and Jona has background in the marine industry.[1] The company's advisory board collectively brings over 220 years of combined expertise spanning aerosols, permitting and safety, low-carbon fuels, catalysts, scaling, automated modular factory design, and wastewater treatment.[1]
