A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot on Interstate 170 in Missouri on October 14, 2024, and authorities have now charged a suspect in connection with this incident as well as a second highway shooting that occurred three days earlier.1 Willie James Herndon, 43, from Texas, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Alissa Wilson.1 According to federal court documents, Herndon is also implicated in a separate shooting incident on October 11, 2024, near Interstate 55.1 He had no known relationship to Wilson.1
Law enforcement tracked Herndon's movements and arrested him on October 16, 2024, at a motel in Caseyville, Illinois, where investigators discovered an ABC-15 rifle, ammunition matching that used in Wilson's shooting, two license plates, and handwritten notes describing a police vehicle.1 Herndon additionally faces federal charges for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.1
Wilson's father, Robert Hickman, expressed his anguish over the loss, stating: "Alissa was 17 years old, excited about life and looking forward to the future. She was 60 days away from turning 18, and we were planning to go to Disney together—this was a senseless act of violence."1
