Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called for an open discussion with the European Union on free movement of people, signaling that the issue is no longer a red line in negotiations.1 He stated that "free movement of people posed significant challenges in the past, but the type of migration we had then may not be as difficult as what we face now."1
The proposal has drawn support from senior cabinet figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who characterized it as "simply pragmatic," emphasizing that "the Prime Minister has made clear that no option can be ruled out in talks."1 Stella Creasy, chair of the Labour European Movement, described the position as "a mature conversation that should be happening."1 However, Cabinet Office Minister Shabana Mahmood struck a more cautious note, pointing to "considerable difficult trade-offs" involved in such a move.1
The announcement has provoked criticism from both opposition parties and concern within Labour's own ranks. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of failing to "think through the consequences,"1 while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage branded the approach a "complete betrayal of a Brexit Britain."1 Red Wall MPs in northern and central regions have expressed concern about the proposal.1 Richard Walker, chair of the Iceland Group, warned the move sets a "dangerous precedent" and questioned how opening borders would help "a million unemployed young people."1
Net migration figures have risen sharply since the Brexit referendum, climbing from 330,000 to approximately 900,000 by January 2020.1
