An international research team led by the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics has identified three actively feeding supermassive black holes in galaxy J0148-4214, located more than 12.5 billion light-years from Earth 1. This discovery represents a rare phenomenon in the early universe, observed as it existed approximately 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang 1. The finding provides unprecedented evidence of multiple active black holes within a single distant galaxy 1.
The three black holes possess vastly different masses, estimated at approximately 800,000, 6 million, and 80 million times the mass of the Sun 1. Two of the central black holes are separated by just 620 light-years and are expected to merge within hundreds of millions of years 1. The third black hole is located approximately 5,500 light-years from the galaxy's center 1. The most massive black hole dominates the system, while the second-largest black hole exhibits an accretion rate that exceeds the Eddington limit, the theoretical maximum predicted by fundamental black hole growth models, potentially revealing mechanisms by which black holes rapidly grew in the early universe 1. The host galaxy itself contains approximately 1.3 billion times the Sun's mass in stars 1.
Researchers utilized the James Webb Space Telescope's Near Infrared Spectrograph Integral Field Spectroscopy mode (NIRSpec-IFS) to conduct detailed observations of the system 1. This analysis marks the first time that evidence of three active black holes has been confirmed within a single galaxy in the distant universe 1.
