High marriage expenses have become a pressing concern across rural China, driven largely by intense parental involvement and an imbalance in the marriageable population.1 Wang Xiangyang, a researcher at Southwest Jiaotong University, attributes the escalation of bride prices and matchmaking fees to the scarcity of eligible women, which has transformed these practices into a welfare mechanism for struggling families in some areas.1 A young man from northern rural regions captured the burden tersely, saying marriage "has cost my parents half their lives."1
The central government has repeatedly signaled its commitment to addressing the issue. Starting in 2019, multiple iterations of the central No. 1 policy document have called for tackling excessive bride prices, with the 2026 edition reiterating the need for continued efforts to curtail inflated wedding costs in rural communities.1 Wang, who began investigating rural courtship and marriage issues in 2014, notes that while bride prices and marriage intermediary services have emerged as coping mechanisms for certain disadvantaged households, interventions implemented across different regions have achieved limited effectiveness so far.1
