Kenyan entrepreneur Boina was forced to shut down her beauty studio, Waxaholic Studio, after experiencing significant losses to employee theft.1 The studio, which opened on September 1, 2024, closed in October 2025.1 Her case has brought attention to a pervasive problem undermining small enterprises across the continent.
Employee theft represents a major threat to African businesses. According to PwC research from 2022, 63% of organizations in East Africa have experienced economic crime, compared to a global average of 46%.1 For small businesses specifically, employee theft accounts for more than 60% of total losses.1 Large retailers have suffered particularly acute damage: Tuskys supermarket discovered during a 2015 audit that it was losing more than 100 million Kenyan shillings (approximately £581,000 or $770,000) each month,1 while Nakumatt supermarket lost more than $100 million in inventory to employee theft.1 In one documented case, a third employee at an electronics shop run by Muftawu Nabila was able to steal approximately $30 daily over a two-month period from a business with estimated daily sales of $200.1
Legal expert Judith Guserwa has outlined steps business owners should take when confronting suspected theft. She recommends that if an employee admits to stealing and agrees to compensate the business, the agreement must be documented in writing; otherwise, employers should dismiss the worker with just cause and report the incident to authorities.1
