A Nigerian soldier has been detained in connection with providing military uniforms to terrorist and criminal organizations, raising concerns about possible collusion between security forces and armed groups.[1] The arrest occurred at a bus station in Maiduguri, the capital of northeastern Borno State, where Private Mohamed Yousuf was apprehended.[1] Yousuf, who had been stationed at a military equipment factory, fled from his unit earlier this month in an apparent attempt to escape to Cameroon.[1]
The detention reflects growing suspicion of infiltration within Nigeria's armed forces. In April 2025, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum accused the military of harboring informants for Boko Haram.[1] Subsequently, a military tribunal sentenced three Nigerian soldiers to life imprisonment on charges including theft, illegal ammunition trafficking, and "aiding the enemy."[1] These developments occur against a backdrop of severe insecurity in the region: between January 2024 and April 2025, at least 3,000 abductions and 3,580 murders were recorded.[1] School attacks have proven particularly devastating, with 26 major incidents between April 2014 and May 2026 resulting in the kidnapping of at least 2,416 students.[1] One freed hostage paid 57 million naira—approximately $42,000 or £31,000—in ransom to secure their release.[1]
